As surely as long-haired, mother-loving bands from Florida, Alabama and Georgia could put the smell of cotton on '70s arena-rock, the children of the South are now cottoning to modern rock. The boundaries have loosened up a bit--the paradigms of this new breed of Southern rock include Live, from Pennsylvania (just above the Mason-Dixon line), and Arizona's Gin Blossoms--and so has the form. The boogie and jangle of old now compete with distorted guitar crunching, and while the new Southern bands honor and respect the family, they're not afraid to recognize how dysfunctional one can be. Call it cotton alternative.

New Orleans, Louisiana's Better Than Ezra are deep in it--backwoods enough to yearn for the scent of pine and good iced tea (the winsome "Southern Girl"), yet urban enough to know the pain and fury of The Smiths and Nirvana. In "Teenager," they empathize with a misunderstood teen who listens to the Cure and shuffles between the homes of his divorced parents. In the meantime, they're playing a rewritten version of the Outlaws' "Green Grass And High Tides."

A Southern gothic aesthetic is also at work on DELUXE. In "Summerhouse," a man is murdered, apparently by an abused woman, and no one in town can hide a smile. In the gorgeous, unplugged "Porcelain," the singer faces a woman who has stopped loving him and fantasizes about killing her. But where an old-time Southern rocker might've gone through with it, Better Than Ezra just sublimate.

Full DescriptionBlondie but on CROSSING THE RUBICON, the combo's music sometimes has more in common with the taut, dark, throbbing grooves of Wire and Gang of four. "No One Sleeps When I'm Awake" is a hard-hitting dance song that alternates between a bouncy Knack-like riff and driving chorus of pure indie rock, while "4 Songs & a Fight"'s jagged guitar figures and funky bass lines recall Duran Duran. Throughout, however, Ivarsson's aggressive vocal style posits the group definitively among its late-aughts contemporaries.

Radiohead - Pablo Honey

Before the breakthrough that was THE BENDS and the colossal OK COMPUTER, there was the quietly magnificent PABLO HONEY. "Creep" was the surprise hit single in the UK, but even that gave scant indication of how special this band would become. Benefiting from a raw production, the debut was undoubtedly less slick and accomplished than subsequent work, although Thom Yorke's vulnerable but impressive vocal styling was already in place on songs such as "Stop Whispering." Many of the compositions were somewhat simplistic, but in terms of musical maturity Radiohead were clearly years ahead of their time. An indispensable album, it should not be parted from its two big brothers.

Radiohead - OK Computer

OK COMPUTER was nominated for the 1998 Grammy Award for Album Of The Year and won the 1998 Grammy for Best Alternative Music Performance.

OK COMPUTER, Radiohead's third album, is the bombastic follow-up to 1995's sleeper hit THE BENDS, which left critics and listeners as impressed with the band's ability as they were curious about their potential. In spite of its technological-sounding title and apocalyptic sci-fi themes, OK COMPUTER is firmly grounded in the rock verities. Waves of guitars rage beneath the haunting melodies and near-hysterical fits of singer Thom Yorke. This complex, intense swarm of guitars is held aloft by a solid, inventive rhythm section and an impressive array of piano and keyboard textures.

"Paranoid Android" is a six-minute-plus epic with alternating time signatures, wild dynamic shifts, drama and adrenaline to spare. "Let Down," with its double-tracked vocals and rhythmic throb, may give a brief glimpse back at Radiohead's past, but at no point is OK COMPUTER anything but a hurtle forward.

Radiohead - The Bends

Radiohead rebound from one-hit wonder status with this sophomore classic--the first to blueprint their operatic sonics.

On only their second outing Oxford's Radiohead fulfilled their huge potential, fashioning an album whose relentlessly downbeat tone was offset by an ability to formulate consistently winning melodies. The title track and "Just" throw some customary rock poses, but for the most part the band displayed a far more expansive approach. Thom Yorke emerged from the woodwork with a new-found vocal confidence, revealing a striking falsetto on two of the album's strongest tracks, "Fake Plastic Trees" and "High & Dry." The last three songs build inexorably to the stunning emotional climax of "Street Spirit (Fade Out)" with a control and poise that showcased the band's new maturity.

Punk Goes Acoustic

As part of the long-running, gimmicky series from Fearless Records and BMG, Punk Goes Acoustic features a gaggle of youthful punk revivalists unplugging the patch chords and tuning up the acoustics. The bands aren't doing covers, which is a format change from the gimmickry of past titles like Punk Goes Metal or Punk Goes Pop. Instead, you get bands like Simple Plan, the Ataris, Further Seems Forever, Yellowcard, and Midtown running acoustically through their songs with passably entertaining results. The comp should be of interest to fans of these groups looking for something a bit different, but it's by no means a must-have.

I AM SAM was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Compilation Album For A Motion Picture Or Television..

In the film I AM SAM, Sean Penn's title character is a mentally challenged, Beatles-obsessed character who lands in the middle of a custody case for his daughter. With Sam looking to the Fab Four's music for guidance, the accompanying soundtrack is wall-to-wall Lennon-McCartney. Rebuffed for the rights to the original songs, the album's organizers instead recruited an all-star array of talent to contribute Beatles covers within a three-week span. The quick turn-around time meant delightfully original interpretations of these stellar songs as opposed to by-the-numbers readings.

Among the many highlights are Ben Harper's psychedelic "Strawberry Fields Forever," a chiming Aimee Mann/Michael Penn duet on "Two Of Us" and Chocolate Genius' ethereal "Julia." Elsewhere, Eddie Vedder delivers an acoustic-driven "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away" through gritted teeth, Sheryl Crow adds a nice country twang to "Mother Nature's Son," and Stereophonics' raspy take on "Don't Let Me Down" sounds like a Faces outtake.

Although The Black Crowes offer up a stark arrangement of "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds," Grandaddy's chugging alt-rock version of "Revolution" and Nick Cave's melancholy crooning of "Let It Be" make I AM SAM worth the price of admission.

Burning London - The Clash Tribute

One doesn't necessarily associate punk firebrands the Clash with the radio-ready likes of Third Eye Blind and No Doubt. But in the years since the demise of the Clash, their impact, once localized to the punk underground, has seeped up from the gutter they once championed. ("The truth," rasped Joe Strummer in one of his more memorable couplets, "is known only by guttersnipes.") Burning London affords a dozen-plus popular late-'90s performers the opportunity to tip their hats to the erstwhile scourges of the mainstream. The results, as is common with such tributes, are wildly mixed. The highlights here exhibit a less-than-reverent perspective on this timeworn material. Moby and Heather Nova turn "Straight to Hell" into a haunting echo of the Combat Rock prototype, while Cracker's cowpunk trashing of "White Riot" would've sounded at home on an album by frontman David Lowery's great old band, Camper Van Beethoven. On the downside, Indigo Girls' "Clampdown" is an artless revision of one of the Clash's least artful songs, and the likes of Third Eye Blind and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones bring nothing new to "Train in Vain" and "Rudie Can't Fail," respectively. If the featured bands are the draw here, help yourself. But if you're curious about the Clash, the group's bursting-at-the-seams debut and watershed London Calling will serve as superior introductions to a mighty band.

There's nothing particularly fancy about Tracy Chapman's particular brand of folk-rock; she just blends the folk into the rock more appealingly than most anyone out there. Her music has enough verve to have vaulted her out of obscurity twice. ... Full DescriptionHer fifth jaunt, TELLING STORIES, continues her charming consistency with an alluring set of picture-perfect tunes.

The bouncy title track opens the album with a clever circular play on a deceptively simple line, "there's a fiction in the space between...," which makes it clear from the start that Tracy remembers the value of a good pop song. Good pop songs abound on TELLING STORIES, from the country-rock of "Less Than Strangers" to the singer-songwriter folk of "Unsung Psalm" to the upbeat dance of "It's OK." Between her acclaimed debut and TELLING STORIES, very little about Chapman has changed, which is both comforting and good, the world needs good, well-meaning folk-pop songwriters and good, well-meaning folk-pop songs.

Tracy Chapman - Matters of the Heart

Chapman's debut and its quickly produced follow-up CROSSROADS sound very much alike. While not a total departure, 1992's MATTERS OF THE HEART has a much different, richer sound. Subtle elements of world music, blues, and jazz enrich the folk-based ... Full Descriptionstarkness of the previous records. Unfortunately, this album was slightly too different for many of Chapman's early fans, and the incorrect received wisdom claims that it's a creative misstep.

The more textured arrangements and Jimmy Iovine's slick but not sterile production support Chapman's lyrics without overpowering them, and those lyrics are more mature and personal than before. The sometimes-empty sloganeering of CROSSROADS is at the barest minimum here, with Chapman instead focusing on character sketches like the thoroughly lovely "I Used to Be a Sailor" and the delicate title track. One of Tracy Chapman's finest.

Tracy Chapman - Crossroads

On her second album, Tracy Chapman goes the traditional singer-songwriter route--think Carly Simon, James Taylor, etc.--by largely writing about the effects on her life of the unexpected success of her first album. The title track, standard blues imagery aside, is as self-analytical and autobiographical as any one of Joni Mitchell's early '70s albums. Other songs, like "Material World," address the same concerns in more subtle fashion.

Elsewhere, Chapman looks at freedom and oppression in such songs as the Nelson Mandela tribute "Freedom Now" and "All That You Have is Your Soul." Chapman and producer David Kershenbaum add subtle touches like horns, slide guitar (courtesy of Neil Young), and accordion, opening up the guitar-and-voice canvas of her self-titled debut and fleshing out the strongly melodic songs without overpowering them.

Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace is the sixth studio album by the Foo Fighters, released on September 25, 2007. The album is produced by Gil Norton who previously worked with the group on their second album, The Colour and the Shape.

The album debuted at the top of the UK album chart, selling 135,685 albums in its first week. The album also went platinum in its first week in both Australia and New Zealand. In the U.S., it entered the Billboard 200 album chart at #3, selling 168,668 copies in its first week, and has since been certified gold. As of July 24, 2008, it has sold 771,757 copies in US.

The album was the band's fourth to have a song reach the top of the Modern Rock Tracks, with "The Pretender", as well as "Long Road to Ruin" and "Let It Die". With 18 weeks at the summit, "The Pretender" also set the record for longest stretch at #1 on Billboard's Alternative / Modern Rock chart. With "Long Road to Ruin" and "Let It Die", the album has a total of 26 weeks atop the chart, making it the most successful album on the chart since Linkin Park's Meteora. Also with "Let It Die", it is the group's first album to spawn 3 Number One hits from the same album on the Modern Rock Tracks charts, it is only the ninth album in history to spawn 3 number 1 hits on this chart.

The album won the 2008 Grammy for Best Rock Album and "The Pretender" won for Best Hard Rock Performance. The album was also nominated for Album of the Year, while "The Pretender" was also nominated for Record of the Year and Best Rock Song. The band had previously won Best Rock Album Grammys for There Is Nothing Left to Lose and One by One. As of June 2008, it is the only Foo Fighters album not to be certified platinum in the United States, their previous album, In Your Honor, by this point having long since received Platinum certifications in America, although One By One took almost a year to receive Platinum certification.

Electric Ladyland is the third and final album by The Jimi Hendrix Experience, released on October 16, 1968 on Reprise Records (see 1968 in music). Written and produced by Jimi Hendrix, the album is seen as the peak of Hendrix's mastery of the electric guitar, and is frequently cited as one of the greatest rock albums of all time. It is not only the last of his albums released as the Jimi Hendrix Experience, but also the last of Hendrix's studio albums to be professionally produced under his own supervision. After Electric Ladyland, Hendrix spent the remaining two years of his life attempting to organize a new band and recording a breadth of new songs.

Released as a double album, Electric Ladyland is a cross-section of Hendrix's wide range of musical talent. It includes samples of several genres and styles of music, including the psychedelia of "Burning of the Midnight Lamp" (previously a UK single in the summer of 1967), the bluesy guitar jam "Voodoo Chile", the New Orleans-style rock and roll of "Come On", the epic studio production of "1983... (A Merman I Should Turn to Be)", and the political commentary of "House Burning Down". The album also features a cover version of Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower" that was widely praised by many, including Dylan himself, as well as "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)", a staple of both radio and guitar repertoire.

Jimi Hendrix - 1967 - Axis: Bold As Love

Axis: Bold as Love is the second studio album by The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Under pressure from their record company to follow-up the successful debut of their May 1967 album Are You Experienced, Axis: Bold as Love was released in the UK in December 1967. It reached #5 in the UK and later, #3 in the US.

The album was recorded to fulfill the band's contract, which stated that they must produce two albums in 1967. Even so, it was not released in the USA until 1968 due to fears that it may disturb the sales of the first album. Bassist Noel Redding has noted that this was his favourite of three Experience albums. He plays eight string bass on some tracks.

Just before the album's completion, Hendrix left the master tapes of side 1 in a taxi. They were never found again, and thus the A-side had to be mixed again quickly.

In 2003, the album was ranked number 82 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
