By 2002, if most people remembered Dishwalla at all, it was probably for their cover of the Carpenters' "It's Going to Take Some Time" from the tribute album released back in the grunge era. Well, the Dishwalla that presents itself on OPALINE is all grown up and not afraid to show it. The title track opens things up with a moody, Eastern flavor that suggests a cross between the mellower sides of U2 and Pearl Jam. The hushed, melodic tones of "Today, Tonight" show that Dishwalla is eminently capable of convincing balladry. In a manner somewhat comparable to Stone Temple Pilots, this quintet has transcended its beginnings in the Cobain age to become an accessible group capable of turning out hummable pop tunes or searing rockers with an equal degree of skill.
