The Sounds - Crossing The Rubicon

Swedish synth-punkers the Sounds garnered loads of attention with their sharp, high-energy melding of `80s new wave-style pop and angular post-punk. Fronted by blonde chanteuse Maja Ivarsson, the group has been compared to Missing Persons and Blondie but on CROSSING THE RUBICON, the combo's music sometimes has more in common with the taut, dark, throbbing grooves of Wire and Gang of four. "No One Sleeps When I'm Awake" is a hard-hitting dance song that alternates between a bouncy Knack-like riff and driving chorus of pure indie rock, while "4 Songs & a Fight"'s jagged guitar figures and funky bass lines recall Duran Duran. Throughout, however, Ivarsson's aggressive vocal style posits the group definitively among its late-aughts contemporaries.

Personnel: Jesper Anderberg (vocals, guitar, piano, keyboards, synthesizer); Felix Rodriguez (vocals, guitars); Maja Ivarsson (vocals); Johan Bengtsson (bass instrument); Fredrik Nilsson (drums, percussion).

Audio Mixer: Tim Palmer.

Spin (p.93) - "'No One Sleeps When I'm Awake' offers a dose of what the Sounds do best: beguiling, unabashed hooks."
Alternative Press (p.128) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "On RUBICON, chic new-wave synths, glittering hooks and pop-savvy beats replace the throwing-elbows riffs and brash yelps of early songs..."
